recapping the Ball Bustas' greatest victory

well, you know something big has happened if my blog has decided to awake from its hibernation.

boys and girls, i am here to talk to you about the greatest game in Ball Bustas history.

well, being as we have been playing intramural softball (and a season of wiffleball) together since February of 2008, it might not be the best game in Ball Bustas history but since it's on the top of my mind, i am going to claim it as a historical event. that's how i look at history, it's why Smashmouth is a greater band in my mind than the Beatles. if we win again next week, i may remember that as the greatest game that we've ever played.

but anyways...

so the Ball Bustas had been struggling as of late. we won a divisional championship two seasons ago (i have a plaque at home to prove that) but we went 1-7 last season with that one victory being a forfeiture. and we had started this season with three straight losses and one of those losses was an 18-0 shellacking two weeks ago.

so the Ball Bustas desperately needed a win and after falling into an 12-4 hole in the third inning, it didn't look like we were going to get it. but we kept picking away at the deficit and in the bottom of the fifth inning, we tied the game 16-16. and since the game had exceeded its 55-minute limit, we were heading to extra innings.

extra innings is a different beast in the intramural softball world because it's a one pitch game. yes, every batter starts with a 3-2 count so you either walk, get a hit or get an out (fouls are counted as outs).

in the first extra inning, i took advantage of the umpire's wide strike zone and somehow struck out three batters. no runs scored. in the bottom of that inning, i got to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs... and i fouled out.

neither teams scored in the second extra inning. well, that isn't exactly true. the opposing team actually hit a grand slam but we play on the low rung of the Cap City Softball ladder so a softball hit over the fence not only counts as an out but it ends an inning.

so i had loaded the bases before this kid hit it out... but instead of that team taking a four-run lead with no outs, the inning was over with the score still tied. and being as this was the second inning-ending home run that i served up on Wednesday, i think this may be the first time that a defense has celebrated a home run. i was literally saying "get out, get out!" as soon as the ball rocketed off this guy's bat.

in the third and final extra inning, i gave up two early runs but after a couple of solid defensive plays, we got out of the inning in a 18-16 hole. flash forward to the bottom of the inning and we had Mike on second base and Lindsey on first base with two outs. David drove them both in with a double (Lindsey is fast, I don't know if i could have made it to third base on that play) and then Natassha slugged home the game-winning run with a double of her own.

GREATEST WIN EVER!!!

so the Ball Bustas improved to 1-3 with the comeback victory. we got solid defensive play from Eric our right fielder, MK our catcher and Kelley our third baseman and i'm pretty sure that everyone contributed offensively. my guess is that my ERA ballooned to 987.3 on Wednesday night but i'll take the victory any day of the week.

next week, we have a rematch against the team that beat us by 18 runs so maybe this win will propel us to a victory. maybe this win will give us no momentum as we head into next week's showdown and we'll lose 45-6.

either way, i don't care. last night was awesome.

Smashmouth, play us out.
